Wetlands are essential for our environment—they filter water, reduce flooding, recharge groundwater, cycle nutrients and store carbon to combat climate change. They also serve as crucial habitats for countless plant and animal species, supporting biodiversity and sustaining local communities. Despite their importance, wetlands are disappearing at an alarming rate.
BRRVLN is approaching the completion of the Kidneys of the Catchment project, as part of Caring for Catchments, which has been working on four wetland sites within the Kyogle Local Government Area. Each of the sites involved represent a different wetland type and management context and demonstrate different restoration approaches and outcomes.
A protected natural wetland located within a grazing property managed to improve ecosystem function and landscape hydration.
A large, enhanced farm dam on a conservation property, managed to improve wildlife habitat and downstream water quality.
A small, constructed wetland designed to compensate for the historic loss of wetlands on surrounding agricultural land.
A highly disturbed natural lagoon undergoing restoration to improve its ecological condition and amenity values for public visitors.
Collectively, these sites showcase diversity in wetland restoration opportunities and provide practical examples of how tailored management can enhance biodiversity, water quality, and landscape resilience across different land uses. Case studies of these sites will soon be available on the BRRVLN website.
Would you like to improve the environmental values of a wetland, lagoon, backswamp or farm dam on your property? Are you interested in having your site assessed for potential restoration action?
BRRVLN is scoping community interest for future Wetland Restoration Action in the upper Richmond catchment - Kyogle LGA and Richmond Valley LGA.
At this stage we are gathering contact details of interested people. If this sounds like you, please submit an Expression of Interest. No funds are available at the moment - we are scoping interest for future funding applications.
In partnership with the Australian Wetland Consultancy, BRRVLN will be delivering an online webinar on Wetland Management at 7pm on Thursday the 30th of July. If you would like to register for this event, please complete the EOI.
